What To Do If Your Brakes Go Out
If you have ever experienced your brakes suddenly giving up while you are driving you know just how scary a brake failure is.  Trying to slow down when your brakes are not working is extremely difficult and terrifying.

Many people assume that a brake failure will never happen to them.  But even if you have your vehicle serviced regularly and the brakes and brake fluid level checked, you should still be prepared to handle an unexpected no brakes emergency.  knowing how to handle the sudden loss of the vehicles brakes can save your life and prevent serious possible injury to others around you.  It is every drivers responsibility to be a safe and courteous driver. Therefore, It’s a good idea to understand what to do if your brakes fail.

It is very important to familiarize yourself with the procedures for dealing with a loss of braking power or a total loss of the brakes.

If you ever lose your brakes don't panic and immediately lift your foot off the gas pedal.  Then try the brakes again by pumping them with your foot and leg strength.  Sometimes brake fluid lines get clogged by dirt or even air bubbles.  Pumping the brakes can force whatever is blocking the brake fluid lines out.  The brakes need hydraulic brake fluid to activate the brake caliper pistons which press the brake pads against the rotors which are bolted to your vehicle wheels.  Pumping the brake may force out the clog and restore brake fluid and braking power to the brake system. 

If pumping the brakes does not work, then carefully engage the emergency parking brake just a little bit at a time until the car slows enough to safely pull over onto the side of the road.  Do not suddenly pull or yank the emergency brake up to it's maximum position because you could cause your vehicle to go into a skid and spin.  The emergency brake does not rely on hydraulic brake fluid.  The emergency or parking brake is mechanical and is actuated by a cable that is connected to your emergency brake. Pull it up slowly and carefully if you have a emergency brake handle or press it down gradually if you have the foot pedal type of emergency brake.  Then turn on your emergency hazard lights.  They will flash and warn other vehicles to go around you.

Another way you can help slow the vehicle down is by shifting into a lower gear.  This is called downshifting and will slow the vehicle down.  This technique is also called engine braking but it is the lower gearing in the vehicle transmission that will slow the vehicle down rather than the engine.  Always try to pull over as far as you can to the side of the road so you are out of the way of traffic.  After you are safely out of harms way on the shoulder of the road stay in your vehicle and call for help.
